Born on a barge on the Reik, Gerhard had been linked to the mighty waterway his whole life. His family worked the river, moving light goods on their small barge between some of the hamlets and villages. When he was sixteen, their boat was lost to fire and the family fell into hard times. Gerhard, a skilled deckhand, managed to find work on the sizable ship “The Gilded Narwhal” where he worked often as a lookout in the crow nest. He earned the nickname “the Reik Rat” for his ability to climb and clamber up and down rigging, crates, and whatever else was aboard the ship and wharves. His personality and quirks only lend strength to the nickname. He left the Narwhal, just recently, after making a tidy enough sum to purchase a share on a small skiff for his father. He aims to collect some more money to help his folks replace their lost business.
Long and lean with darting, intelligent eyes the similarities between Gerhard and his namesake are there. Otherwise he is unremarkable, bearing the odd scar here and there from his many years of working on the boats. His eyes are constantly moving and he tends to be very alert, he’s had enough few misses in his life to know to stay sharp and be aware off his surroundings.
Amicable enough, Gerhard gets along well enough with most folks. His mannerisms maybe slightly off putting to those who don’t quite know him: slightly shifty and despite his lack off interest his keen perception and his knack for picking up on the smaller details of his area or current conversation.
